PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY

HOD : Mr.Nitin Deshmukh

Pharmaceutical chemistry is the study of drugs and it involves cures and remedies for disease drug development. This includes drug discovery, chemical synthesis and development for market of pharmaceutical agents, or bio-active molecules (drugs), delivery, absorption, metabolism and more. There are elements of biomedical analysis, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Pharmaceutical chemistry leads to careers in drug development, biotechnology, pharmaceutical companies, research facilities, and more. Studying pharmaceutical chemistry allows students to contribute to life-saving remedies, enhance the speed of delivery of new medications and help others.

PHARMACEUTICS

HOD : Mr. Bhagwan Yadav

Pharmaceutics is the discipline of pharmacy that deals with the process of turning a new chemical entity (NCE) or old drugs into a medication to be used safely and effectively by patients. It encompases all the disciplines from preformulation studies, pilot scale-up studies, manufacture, evaluation or quality control study, labelling and packaging etc., until a new drug entity reaches the market. It is also known as science of dosage form design. Pharmaceutics deals with the formulation of a pure drug substance into a dosage form such as a Tablets, Capsules, Injectables etc.,

Our department concentrates on four areas of pharmaceutics:
• Industrial Pharmacy study of manufacture of Dosage forms like tablets, capsules, syrups, injectables and the evaluation of the dosage forms.
• Biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics, the study of factors affecting drug release and absorption and the study of time course of drug in the body namely, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, once it enters the body, especially in relation to time and concentration.
• Advanced drug delivery, the development of the most appropriate form or method for administering a pharmaceutical compound.
• Nanotechnology and nanomedicine, the design of medical interventions at the scale of nano range as nanosuspensions or nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery.

The students are working in the laboratories pursue the basic knowledge about pharmaceutical dosage forms, preformulation aspects, formulation development and evaluation of dosage forms like tablet, capsule, ointment and parenterals etc during four year graduation program. At postgraduate level, the research objective is focused on formulation and development of various types of advanced drug delivery systems like microencapsulation, floating drug delivery systems, Colon targeted drug delivery, fast dissolving doasge forms, solubility enhancement techniques etc.

SALIENT FEATURES OF DEPARTMENT :
• The Department has spacious working place. Each laboratory of department is well equipped instruments and facilitated with chemicals, glassware’s, equipments and labwares.
• Practicals and/or assignments are carried out according to the academic schedule and enough time is available with student to peruse the knowledge.
• Adequate Faculty members are available.

PHARMACOGNOSY

HOD : Mr. Narendra Singh Bhadore

The term ‘pharmacognosy’ was derived by the merger of two Greek words (e.g., pharmakon—drug and gnosis—knowledge of) to mean the knowledge of drugs. It was introduced and used for the first time to define the branch of medicine or commodity which deals with crude drugs.

Pharmacognosy is the study of drugs derived from natural sources. It forms an important part of pharmaceutical research and development. Pharmacognosy involves the identification, physicochemical characterization, cultivation, extraction, preparation, quality control, and biological assessment of drugs. A plant leaf, flower, root, animal or plant extract may be used to isolate the bioactive chemical.

Any plant preparation used for health purposes rather than simply for nutritional supplementation or to add flavor to food is called a medicinal preparation.

Pharmacognosy is used by pharmaceutical companies to screen, characterize and produce new drugs for the treatment of human disease. Often, naturally occurring drugs cannot be mass produced, so they must be studied in order to develop synthetic biosimilars. The pharmacognosy has played a important role in the development of various departments of the science. Pharmacognosy gives a sound knowledge of the vegetable drugs under botany and animal drugs under zoology.

The scope of pharmacognosy is broad and includes the scientific study of crude drugs, medicinal products (e.g., enzymes, vitamins, antibiotics, pesticides, allergens, and allergenic extracts), and excipients (e.g., coloring, flavouring, emulsifying and suspending agents, diluents, bulking or filler agents, disintegrants, anesthetic aids, sweeteners, binders, adhesives, solidifiers and also the research problems in the areas of phytochemistry, microbial chemistry, biosynthesis, biotransformation, chemotaxonomy, and other biological and chemical sciences. Studies on poisonous, hallucinogenic, and teratogenic plants; raw materials for the production of oral contraceptives, aphrodisiacs, etc., as well as spices, beverages, and condiments are included in the subject matters of pharmacognosy.

In short pharmacognosy is an important link between pharmaceuticals and basic science as well as Ayurvedic and allopathic system of medicines. So pharmacognosy is a science of active principles of crude drugs and which can be help in dispensing, formulating, and manufacturing of dosage forms. In other way the complete knowledge of pharmacognosy will help in the recent trend that is in industries.

PHARMACOLOGY

HOD : Dr. Prabhat Kumar Das

Pharmacology is the study of drugs and the mechanisms underlying their beneficial and undesirable effects. Pharmacology is the science concerned with all aspects of the action of drugs and other chemicals on living systems. Its primary aim is the discovery of chemical mechanisms by which cellular and molecular functions are regulated for the purpose of understanding how existing drugs act and to develop new drugs for treatment and diagnosis of human diseases. The discipline of pharmacology explores biology through the actions of drugs and chemical substances. Drugs and chemicals produce their effects only through modifications of underlying biological systems; their actions are useful in regulating not only normal functions of cells and organisms but also the abnormal processes which occur in disease. Research in pharmacology generates new knowledge and tools that can lead to better treatments for devastating medical problems. Our pharmacology department is equipped with all the required instruments and animal simulator softwares to carry out the educational activities by the under graduates. It includes Perspex bath assembly, Actophotometer, Rota-rod, Pole climbing apparatus, Radiant heat Analgesiometer, Eddy’s Hot plate, Mercury Plethysmograph, centrifuge, Digital pH meter, Plus maze Apparatus, Metabolic Cages, Digital Telethermometer, Electroconvulsiometer, Lucas Moist Chamber, Histamine Chamber and a CPCSEA registered animal house facility. Our objective is to produce competent students to meet the needs of the industry and research organizations, drug discovery research and critical evaluation of biological activities. Our department is striving forward to provide quality education to students so that they can face various challenges in drug discovery, development, Pre Clinical and clinical trials.
